“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Have you ever felt heavy? Like there’s a gray cloud following you everywhere you go? Or like you’ve been drained of your light? Regardless of how much effort you put into that project at work, or how hard you try to stay positive and present in the lives of your friends and family, you still seem to fall short. Mary Magdalene had lived a sinful, difficult life—but she was radically transformed after she met Jesus. She stepped into a new identity, became a bold and devoted follower, and spent her days with Jesus and His disciples. Before His crucifixion, Mary Magdalene poured all the expensive perfume she had onto Jesus’ feet and washed them with it. Some bystanders were outraged by this act, saying the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But Jesus saw her heart. She was humbling herself before Him, pouring out her love as she washed His feet—offering every ounce of herself in a reverent act of devotion. She left behind the dark, heavy life she had known before Jesus and was cleansed from within. She chose to live the rest of her life with Christ at the center. That same cleansing is available to us today. Jesus says, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” He invites us to lay everything at His feet. He has prepared a better way for us. It won’t always be the easier path—that’s not His promise—but His promise is that if we let Him, He will sustain us. Be encouraged today, knowing His promises are true and He is a faithful God.
