But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
We have all been there—intentionally trying to put yourself in a position to hear from God, but thoughts of to-do lists swarm your mind. You mean to be still and listen, but can’t seem to focus longer than 20 seconds before your attention is drawn elsewhere. Perhaps you really do have a big impending deadline or extreme desires to achieve a certain title or status, but God just wants us. “Come back to Me,” are the words I heard as I was driving down the interstate this past weekend. Yes, the career and the experiences are meaningful, but Jesus just wants you, as you are. There isn’t a benchmark you have to hit to receive His love. As children of God, our mission on earth is to live out the lives God has intended for us to the fullest and not stop an inch short of it. Isn’t it encouraging to know there is not anything we can do to earn our salvation? It is a gift we are freely given, and in return, we must give to others the same love and compassion. By seeking first His kingdom, we are taking ourselves out of the center of it all. By submitting to His will, we are able to fully step into the lives He intends for us. He didn’t intend for our worries to be the first thing on our mind in the morning—His new mercies should be. He didn’t intend for comparison to steal our joy—His joy should be our strength. Come back to Him. However far your mind starts to wander, let us remember our Shepherd, who guides us by still waters, is calling us to return to Him, and He will give us peace in all things.
